To Promote A Finksburg Community,

Whose Objective Is To Preserve The Fundamental Quality Of Life Where Farms, Families And Businesses

May Coexist In A Manner Beneficial To All

Next Meeting Of The Finksburg Planning Area Council Is Thursday, March 27th.  The Board of County Commissioners are scheduled to attend this meeting which begins at 7 p.m. at Sandy Mount United Methodist Church On Old Westminster Pike.

Due to a scheduling conflict last month the commissioners weren’t able to attend our last meeting.  It didn’t matter because the continuing Monster snow storm forced the meeting to be canceled anyway.  So this month the commissioners plan to come out and meet with FPAC.  On the agenda will be discussion involving:

Finksburg Corridor Plan

Gateway Improvement

Liberty Watershed/Water Quality

Traffic Congestion

Gerstell Academy

Finksburg Library

Upgrading roads in older subdivisions

Commercial revitalization

Ag preservation

Council of Governments

 Better communication

Please come to this very important meeting so you can meet and ask questions of the new board.

Health Concern:

Front page story in the March 12 “Carroll County Times” about two Finksburg residents experiencing contaminated water. The suspicion is it’s from one of the underground gas tanks at the, now closed for renovations, Jiffy Mart.  The county is testing to see where the contaminate is coming from. This is the latest as of 3/13/03 from Board member and Carroll County Trails resident Doris Edwards:

Carroll County's Water Quality Specialist Brian Flynn told me that an investigation was ongoing. The Jiffy Mart and the 2 houses next to it on Suffolk Rd. were tested and were found to have levels of MTBE, which were above the conservative levels of safety.

The EPA has no official standard for this chemical, although at 20/40 parts per billion, it is apparent to detect by taste or smell. It has a smell similar to paint thinner.

Residents are very concerned because the neighborhood as a whole, as well as AT&T and the shopping center, are not being given precautionary steps to take, unless each person calls.

Brian Flynn has been helpful in answering questions of individuals, but we feel the county should be taking steps to notify each residence of what's going on. I have been getting a lot of calls and try to relay the information that I am aware of. Brian said that if there is no apparent taste or smell, we're probably okay, but to be safe, we should use bottled water except for washing clothes and bathing. All drinking water and cooking water should be bottled if you have any concerns. He also said that a lab from Columbia would be coming into the community and testing wells in phases. It will take two weeks to get the results. ”

Finksburg Planning Area Council has invited Brian Flynn to attend the 3/27 meeting to update residents and answer any questions.

Gerstell Academy Update:

The state Water Management Administration approved Gerstell Academy’s request for the right to take more water from three wells on the school’s property.  The permit was issued March 10 to the Freven Foundation LLC to appropriate and use an annual average of 24,000 gallons of water per day and a daily average of 55,000 gallons per day for the month of maximum use.  The water will be withdrawn from three wells on the Gerstell Academy property and will be used for sanitation, a potable supply and irrigation.   The state says the request is OK and should not affect well water capacity for surrounding neighbors.   If anyone wants to challenge the approval they can  contact Mat Tiahrt, communications director, FPAC. and he’ll point you in the right direction.
